GOVERNMENT SIGNS $11.9M DEAL WITH CHINA TO BOOST ELECTRICITY IN GREATER BANJUL
The Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines and Chinese company TBEA today signed an $11.9 million contract for a project to retrofit medium- and low-voltage distribution lines and improve power connections in the Greater Banjul Area.
The energy sector remains in the spotlight as the government pushes for lasting solutions to the persistent electricity challenges.
This China Aid project is designed to enhance the distribution and connection of medium and low-voltage power in the Greater Banjul Area.
NAWEC Managing Director, Gallo Saidy, described it as part of efforts to end the current challenges, praising the Chinese government through its Embassy in Banjul as a reliable development partner.
Chinese Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Liu Jin, said electricity remains a key area of cooperation between China and The Gambia, noting that upon completion, the project will provide a stable and reliable supply and transmission system for NAWEC.
Petroleum, Energy and Mines Minister Nani Juwara said the project will benefit thousands of households across 40 communities, lifting them out of darkness for good. He reaffirmed the government's commitment, under President Adama Barrow, to universal access to electricity.
The project is expected to be completed in 18 months. The project is funded by China Aid as part of the Chinese government's support for The Gambia. The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry's offices in Brusubi.
