Lamin Sateba Youths Mobilize to Repair Damaged Lamin Lodge Highway
By Mariama Nyang
Youths in Lamin Sateba—alongside local taxi drivers and shop owners operating along the Lamin Lodge Highway Sunday, 27 September 2026 have launched a community-led initiative to repair the deteriorating roadway.
The highway serves as a vital route for residents, workers, students, local businesses, and visitors. However, severe potholing and structural damage have made movement increasingly hazardous for both motorists and pedestrians. To provide temporary relief, community volunteers collaborated to fill major potholes with gravel, restoring basic access along key sections of the road.
Speaking to Global Radio and TV, Khalifa Manneh, a youth leader in Lamin Sateba, noted that the initiative came at a critical moment given the daily travel challenges facing community members.
Manneh explained that he first consulted traditional and local authorities including the Chief, the Alkalo, and the Village Development Committee (VDC) to present his plan. After securing their endorsement, he mobilized local youths, who enthusiastically agreed to take part in the project.
The VDC provided modest financial assistance to cover vehicle rental costs and gravel purchases, enabling volunteers to backfill the largest and most dangerous hazards along the corridor.
According to Manneh, the effort highlights young people's readiness to participate in community development and civic engagement when provided structured opportunities to tackle local challenges.
A Critical Artery Beyond Transportation
The Lamin Lodge Highway serves as more than just a transit link; it acts as a lifeline to essential services and key regional economic drivers.
A local health center located along the highway relies on the route for patient transport and emergency medical access. Furthermore, several area schools line the corridor, requiring students, parents, and educators to navigate the road daily.
Road conditions degrade significantly during the rainy season, when deep potholes, accumulated mud, and standing water impede traffic and leave pedestrians exposed to splashing from passing vehicles.
Additionally, the highway serves as the main access route to Lamin Lodge, a prominent eco-tourism destination set within a rich riverine landscape. Community leaders stress that comprehensive road improvements would boost tourist access, attract commercial investment, and generate employment opportunities for local youth.
Calls for Sustainable Infrastructure
While the volunteer repair effort has temporarily eased transit difficulties, community members stress that temporary measures cannot substitute for long-term infrastructure planning.
The youth organization is appealing to regional authorities, the Area Council, philanthropic organizations, and government stakeholders to prioritize the complete rehabilitation of the Lamin Lodge Highway.
Volunteers affirmed their commitment to ongoing community maintenance efforts, but emphasized that the scale and economic significance of the highway demand formal institutional intervention.
Ultimately, the situation underscores broader challenges surrounding rural infrastructure, public access, and regional economic development. Restoring this essential corridor is vital to supporting local education, healthcare, tourism, and long-term commercial growth.
