Tragedy off the Coast of Mauritania: Gambia-Based Migrant Boat Sinks

A migrant boat that reportedly departed from Kartong, The Gambia, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at approximately 2:00 AM GMT, sank off the coast of Mauritania this afternoon.

According to an official document, the boat was carrying 65 people. However, family members state that 72 people were on board when the vessel left The Gambia.

After spending four days at sea, the passengers reportedly ran out of food and drinking water. The captain attempted to turn the boat around, but the engine failed, leaving the vessel stranded and drifting at sea.

Thankfully, 37 people were rescued by the fishing vessel Capitan Morgan, operated by A2M.

The 37 survivors include:

 Senegalese: 16

 Guineans: 12

 Gambians: 9

Reports indicate that the boat had no GPS and was completely out of fuel when located.

If the family reports of 72 passengers are confirmed, 35 people remain unaccounted for and are feared dead. Based on the official document listing 65 passengers, 28 people remain missing.

We extend our deepest thoughts and prayers to the survivors and to the families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.

This tragedy once again highlights the severe and deadly risks faced by those navigating the Atlantic migration route.
